― Toni Morrison
Ruby joined the Social Insights team in June 2024.
Ruby Bafu is an intern at Social Insights Research and a PhD Candidate in Sociology at UW-Madison. Using digital ethnographic methods, she investigates how two online learning programs, one large and one a microschool, utilize unique strategies for educating and supporting the children they serve, particularly those who have been historically marginalized due to their race, gender, class, disability status, and other social factors. In her previous research, Ruby used Black Feminist Discourse Analysis to examine how Black girls are framed in news articles.
Ruby is an NSF Predoctoral Fellow and a previous Fellow at the Race, Ethnicity, and Inequality in Education Collaborative Training Grant Fellowship Program at UW-Madison. She holds a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Spanish and Inequality Studies from Cornell University as well as an M.A. in Sociology from UW-Madison. When she isn’t doing research Ruby loves going for bike rides, doing yoga, and spending time with her cat, Eclipse.
